Am I Repeating Myself?

Posted in Perspective | 10 comments

I am stuck for words and everything I could say has already been said.

Ever feel like that?

Stuck for words because the internet is full of them, and the backlog of great ideas waiting to let loose is pushing hard. What could I possibly add?

I’m stuck for words because they’ve already heard everything I have to say on the matter, and their little ears are ringing and maybe tone-deaf. Mother-tone deaf. Do I really need to repeat myself?

But there’s something your mom, your grandma, your 3rd grade teacher used to say over and over again. Something that has stuck and maybe you swore you’d never use but it’s just so good and true and applicable.

You say it and you sound like them but it doesn’t matter. Truth is truth and always it’s what we need to hear over and again.

Words stick, for better or worse.

The worse is that words hurt. Really. Like, more than sticks-and-stones and other silly things we say to make-believe that we are coping, that it doesn’t matter and everything will be fine.

The better is that words can heal and open up and remind. Words can battle the evil in this world and they can be justice for the silent and those that have no voice. Words can remind us of our former resolve and our resolutions in the second month of the year, already with it’s failures.

Words stick, for better or worse, and sometimes they need to breech the dam.

There are those who spend their time filling the world with worthless words that tear down, who spend their time thinking up new ways to sin and looking for new victims. Inventors of evil.

And I complain of the things I’m tired of saying, how I’m tired of reminding my pouting child that Jesus loves him and I’m tired of scripting apologies and tired of trying to facilitate respectful dialog. I want to retreat into quietness because I’ve run out of new words for here and for home.

You could read 10 million other words saying the same things you’re reading here, but I truly believe that the world needs words for good, for better. Words to counteract.

The inventors of evil haven’t stopped inventing, so why should the people of God stop speaking, acting, loving – just because we are all saying the same things?

My kids have heard all my great sayings and motivational speeches/threats. I’m gonna keep saying them anyway, hoping something sticks.

You’ve read a dozen other blogs this week that had better words for the same things I’m trying to say. I’m going to try anyway.

You’ve probably repeated the same words to yourself as you tried to build that new habit or break an old one. I can’t do this or I don’t want to do this or this is too hard. Do it anyway.

Because someday you might stumble on something new or new-to-you and it might just counteract some of that evil, might drowned out worse words that stuck long ago.

And if you truly, truly run out of the better words, maybe you’re just running low on the best ones.

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. – {Hbr 4:12 NKJV}

  1. Such good reflections! Yes, how often I worry as a writer that I don’t have a new thing to say or worse that the truth I know isn’t worth repeating. We who believe words are powerful have plenty of reasons to know it, plenty stored away, and those words are doing their work. We’ve got to keep proclaiming it, continue speaking it over our little ones, keep on believing that the Jesus words we speak or write are as much to remind us of who God is and who we are in him than they are for anyone else. Grateful for your words!

    • Yes! I’m just so up-and-down with these reminders, knowing they’re important but wondering if anything is sticking, anywhere. But even as I study the Word I know to look for repeated words – because they are often the most important. Grateful for you, Ashley.

  2. Yup, just had this thought again today. Thank you for the encouragement. Do it anyway. I’m here from Soli Deo Gloria Sisterhood and I enjoyed the honesty, the wrestling and the well-written phrases.
This lights a candle in the darkness: “why should the people of God stop speaking, acting, loving – just because we are all saying the same things?” Thanks for writing…

    • Thanks, Summer. See how we’re thinking the same things, and writing the same things, and the reminders are just what we all need? Thank you for your words.

  3. Yes! I often think the same things, and wonder why bother? But something keeps me going and I “do it anyway” I’m going to keep going praying that something sticks, more cause I need it, than anyone else. One of the best things I’ve read all week!!

    • Exactly, Alecia – “more cause I need it”!

  4. Well, I think you said these words very well :) . So well, in fact, that I’m going to share.

    • Thank you, Laura. You are a grace : )

  5. Yes, yes, yes. I get this. I’m so glad that Laura sent me your way. This is spot-on.

    • Thanks, Jennifer. Looking forward to telling His story at your place!
